Engineering competition 2011
Rohde & Schwarz puts the future of radiomonitoring in the hands of young engineers
Are you studying electrical engineering, communications engineering, radio engineering or information technology, and do you have a passion for wireless communications? If so, the Engineering Competition 2011 from Rohde & Schwarz is meant for you! For the eighth time, the company, together with the German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE), is organizing its international engineering competition. Under the banner of "Keep pace with the future! The future of radiomonitoring is in your hands!" participants will have to solve real-world tasks.
The students will have to solve various exercises in the field of radiomonitoring – a cutting-edge issue. Due to the increasing radio density and the growing number of different radio transmission standards, monitoring radio traffic is becoming more and more complex. Monitoring systems must keep pace with this trend.
The engineers-to-be will have to design a competitive high-frequency modem. In addition, it will be their job to devise an operation monitoring concept for the modem. These are the very challenges that even experienced developers of monitoring systems face: First the transmission methods used by today’s modems have to be understood, and then this knowledge must be used to develop systems that ensure smooth radio traffic. However, solid technical knowledge is not the only thing that counts. Teamwork, power of persuasion and self-confidence also play an important role. To emerge successfully from the preliminary round, the teams have to present their results to a highly qualified jury comprising a professor, an engineer and a human resources officer from Rohde & Schwarz and win them over.
The preliminary rounds will run from May 10 to June 6, at ten universities in Germany and two in Singapore. In the finals at Rohde & Schwarz Munich headquarters on June 16 and 17, the 12 winning teams selected from the preliminary rounds will compete against each other in tackling an in-depth exercise. The members of the victorious team can look forward to brand new Acer HD Beamers, and their university will be granted 2000 euros / SGD $ 4000. But the participation will be rewarded in any case: Every participant achieves a technical text book from Rohde & Schwarz.
